Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the School Age Eligibility Calculator?
Enter the child's Date of Birth and the school's Admission Cutoff Date, then set the Minimum Required Age in years and months. Click "Check Eligibility" to see whether the child meets the requirement, their exact age on the cutoff date, and a detailed explanation.
How is a child's age calculated for admission?
The calculator finds the exact age (in years and months) of the child as of the admission cutoff date, by computing the difference between the date of birth and the cutoff date โ not today's date.
What is an admission cutoff date?
The cutoff date is the reference date a school uses to determine a child's age for a given academic year โ commonly set to 31st March, 31st May or 1st June depending on the state and board. A child must meet the minimum age requirement on or before this date to be eligible.
What if my child is a few days or months short of the minimum age?
The calculator will show "Not eligible" along with the exact shortfall in years/months. Some schools allow age relaxation on a case-by-case basis โ check with the school directly, as this calculator only reflects the age criteria you enter.
What is the typical minimum age for Nursery or Class 1 admission?
Many schools require a minimum age of around 3 years for Nursery and 5โ6 years for Class 1 as on the cutoff date, but exact requirements vary widely by state, board (CBSE/ICSE/State) and individual school policy โ always confirm with the school's official admission notice.
What does the RTE Act say about admission age?
The Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 mandates free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14 years, and most states use 6 years as on the cutoff date as the entry age norm for Class 1. However, pre-primary classes like Nursery and LKG/UKG are not covered by the RTE Act, so their age norms are set independently by each school or state.
Can the minimum age requirement include both years and months?
Yes โ enter both a years and a months value for the Minimum Required Age (e.g. 5 years 6 months). The calculator adds these together and compares it against the child's exact computed age on the cutoff date, so partial-year requirements are handled precisely.
